Herewini Whakarua, a Maori Battalion soldier from Waitotara, who fell on the battlefields of Europe, was chosen to represent our WW1 fallen. His statue stands in the Moutoa Gardens (Pākaitore), Whanganui.
I was struck with the juxtaposition of this gnarled tree and the smoothness of the War Memorial. The tree appears to have its roots around the lion guarding the names of the dead. I felt that if a picture could be called a haiku, this is it. A fitting tribute to those who will not grow old…

This tower was built as a memorial to those from Whanganui who lost their lives in the First World War. There is a lookout platform at the top, but unfortunately the tower was closed for maintenance.
