  1. Am I right that in due course, if it matures, the rata will send long shoots down to root in the ground and then reestablish itself with several trunks? NZ trees are very ancient and mysterious to me so I might have got this muddled.

    • I have to admit that I am not sure if this is a rata or a Pohutakawa. A friend has said he has seen Pohutakawa survive for years in a situation like this as natural bonsai. Rata do send down roots and eventually establish themselves, but this post is in water most of the time so probably not likely to happen. Unfortunately I will probably not be around long enough to see what happens either way.
