let us wash
the embarrassment of poverty
from our doorsteps
embrace the myth of wealth
that trickles down as rain
close our ears to the cries
of the down-trodden
and oppressed

our money may be better spent
on committees and referendums
that can enhance the coffers
of the rich

let us not worry
about the education and health
of our children
as long as we can spend
on pomp, and ceremony
and great buildings
of architectural significance

and let us slowly sink
into the mire
of our blind hypocrisy
