GONE II

old griefs forgotten
who will remember them then
the old ones

only the wind
shaking the pines
only the river
running to the sea
only the shadows
of the clouds

grey are the clouds
above the muddy river
silent are the songs
that it sung
so long ago

up the hill
the scraped clay bank
glistens still in the sun

ghosts of poplars
and an old grey house
where now the cars pass
unheeding, along the highway
and the silence
comes creeping back
