I am way out of sync right now, and a long way from home.  No photos yet, but here’s a poem…

the tree branch curves, contorts itself
against the snow-cold sky
and the hunched distant shapes of the hills

out at anchor
the boat rides snug
on the deep-breathing sea
somewhere, a tui sings

there may be snow
on the tops tomorrow

wild weather in Christchurch last night
but here, just gentle rain
and sunlight this morning
watching boats sway at their moorings

long swells out past the heads
where dolphins play, and petrels soar
and the sea draws lace curtains
across the broken cliffs

we stagger from side to side
across the decking
as the cat rolls on the waves
losing focus through a fog
of salt spray
