I don’t know where in NZ this must be, but it reminds me of a story my teacher told us about New Zealand when we studied it in school … She said that at the northern most point was a slope and people believed that when you die you slide down the slope into the ocean. I wonder if the story has its origin in New Zealand? Jane

    • In the far north of New Zealand there is a place called Cape Reinga where the Tasman and Pacific Ocean meet. When you stand on the Cape you can see the line where this happens. This might be why the Maori believe that this is the place where the spirits last touch land before beginning the long journey back to Havaiki. There is (or was) a gnarled old Pohutakawa tree growing from the cliffs where they rested.
