CHRISTCHURCH ANNIVERSARY

Today is the second anniversary of  the devastating Christchurch earthquake…

today the words are reluctant
not wanting
to put themselves at risk
of being seen in public
with an idiot
who cannot write
I try to break their selfish silence
by typing garbage
hoping they will be shamed into appearing
but as you see
they are stubborn
perhaps if I start at the beginning
the morning radio with more disaster
and economic carnage
has been thrown out the window
and the newspaper goes blank
when I open it
somewhere
the beginning is lost

but I do remember today
the Christchurch earthquake
the silence of Latimer Square
the spaces that once held buildings
the arms that once held people
the hearts that still hold memories
Kia kaha Christchurch

  1. 22nd February has become a date etched into Christchurch’s heart… and New Zealand’s Soul….and not just for Kiwi’s in New Zealand but for Kiwi’s everywhere. Yes, I sat quietly and remembered them this morning too. There were no words, just silent thoughts and raw emotion that for them, their families and all of us, our world changed forever on 22nd February 2011.

  2. I’m not Christchurch born, but I am Christchurch grown, so essentially it’s my home town too. It’s where my heart and memories are whenever I think of New Zealand. It’s a special place, even in it’s current half suspended state, and for me it will always be that special place called “home”.

  3. I couldn’t do much yesterday. And as if to compound my brain freeze, my laptop broke as well. I went for a walk in the evening and saw all the road cones filled with flowers; just wanted to sit down on the road and cry. And then the final straw; a 4 mag earthquake at about 11pm. I appreciate your post :)
